Preemie Isolette Shirt Variation 1

Use these instructions in combination with the instructions in the
"Preemie Isolette Shirt" pattern.

Isolette Shirt with Wide Fabric Band and Novelty Ribbon

This  is a good project for your fabric and trim scraps.  The results are CUTE!
This is the best way I know to add color and flat embellishment to a preemie diaper shirt.

1. Trace the pattern on to light weight interfacing.

2. Determine how far from the bottom of the shirt you want the fabric-band seam line to be.  This will depend on the fabric, the size of the pattern, and personal preference.  Mark this distance on the traced pattern. Suggestions are listed below:

Size 1 pound:          1 5/8”
Size 2 1/2 pounds:  1 7/8”
Size 3 - 4 pounds:   3 5/8”
Size 5 - 6 pounds:   3 5/8”
Newborn:               3 5/8”
Infant:                     3 5/8”

3. Cut out blocks of fabric a little larger than these parts of the pattern.  Sew the pieces together, pressing the seam allowance toward the bottom.

4. Place the pattern on the block of fabric, adjusting the placement as desired.

5. Mark this fabric-band seam line on the pattern piece and make a mark at the same placement on the back pattern piece.  This mark will determine the seam placement on the shirt back so that the fabric-band seam will match at the side seam when it is sewn together.  Cut out the shirt front and the shirt back.

6. After you have cut out both the front and the back and have sewn the side seams together, hand baste trim or novelty ribbon over the fabric-band seam.  Press.  Make sure that the trim meets at the center front.  Machine stitch along both sides of the the trim.

7. Complete the shirt as instructed in the pattern.
